Power Salad is the debut album from Melbourne based duo Sunmonx out now on Interchill
Records
. Combining Opiuo’s renowned production style with Austero’s tasty guitar grooves, this refreshing sonic fusion weaves together threads from the worlds of blues, dub, funk and beyond. Lovers of bass music, glitch and all things electronica will find plenty to satisfy their cravings within the solid basslines, crisp production and the precision attention to the finest micro-details.

Sunmonx have kept themselves busy in the acoustic kitchen over the last 3 years, carefully combining their nutritious homegrown musical ingredients and perfecting their gourmet dub-infused recipes. Power Salad contains nothing but the freshest fruits of this labour, cultivated as the pair step beyond their self-released Rigiti EP, a 4-track teaser that caught the attention of Interchill Records and many other downbeat lovers around the world. Picking up where they left off, Sunmonx hit the studio with innovation in mind and set out to explore new dimensions of the electronica spectrum. They came up with an energizing album where progressive beats mingle with a prevailing thread of guitar, uniting this diverse palette of sounds and styles into a cohesive and delectable whole. Power Salad hits right on target and stays true to its title, serving up an organic blend of revitalizing tracks to set you on your way. Who’s hungry?

Natcha Atlas – Riverman (Jef Stott Remix)

Natacha Atlas – Riverman (310′s Extended Ambient River Odyssey)

Listen/Buy Natacha Atlas – “Riverman Remixes” from: Six Degrees Shop/iTunes/Amazon

Natacha Atlas has one of the most distinctive and seductive voices in modern music.  Although she is best known for her fusions of Middle Eastern, Western and Electronic styles, over a series of albums, she has shown herself to also be a sublime interpreter of well known songs from a variety of repertoires.  Her latest acclaimed release, Mounqaliba contains what is perhaps her most inspired choice of cover songs: Nick Drake’s classic “Riverman”. Melding the undeniable power of her voice with lush strings, stately piano and subtle arabic percussion , Natacha and her producer/ arranger Samy Bishai re-imagine Drake’s composition in a unique and haunting way.  On the “Riverman Remixes”, a group of electronica’s finest weave a series of beautiful, ambient remixes that respect Natacha’s interpretation while simultaneously charting fascinating new sonic courses for the song.  Remixers include ambient texturalists 310, Global Electronica pioneer Makyo and Middle Eastern fusioneer Jef Stott.

Hear No Evil V. 2 Sampler – Mixed By Jugoe by bastardjazz

Buy from Bastard Jazz - iTunes

FREE DOWNLOAD – “I’m In Love” by Jennifer Lara (Jugoe’s re-work)

Bastard Jazz is one of our favorite labels in any genre. They’re signature sound is defined by a love of electronic, dubby and organic dancefloor music that remains true to those styles but never becomes boring and cliche nor do they try and jump on every new electronic subgenre. They’ve been going strong for ten years now thanks to label co-founder DJ DRM’s open ears and aural discoveries, and they’re commitment to putting out vinyl in this day and age is applauded! Recent favorites include the 7″ ‘Center’s Groove’ record by DJ Center and remixed by Captain Planet, and now a sequel to the ‘Hear No Evil’ compilation. Check out the rest of their releases on their site and if you’re in D.C. for the Rally to Restore Sanity, Bastard Jazz will be playing the after party at Eighteenth Street Lounge. Nice One!

Rena Jones is one of those artists who I have been discovering bit by bit, through a series of excellent tracks on various compilations. We recently connected on Facebook, resulting in her sending me her wonderful latest release, Indra’s Web. By combining the mournful sound of her cello with dubby electronics and full string arrangements featuring the New Millennium Orchestra, Rena has crafted an electronic record with a warm, organic heart. The title track which we are sharing with you today should give you a good idea of the pleasures that await you in the full release. By all means dig deeper into Indra’s Web as well as into Rena’s other releases, some of which feature beautiful smatterings of Indian instrumentation.
