We’ve been big fans of Novalima since their first album dropped on Mr. Bongo over six years ago. Their music always has the right balance of modern production and club beats mixed with traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythm and instrumentation. Co-led by Adrian Quesada, of Grammy-winning Latin ensemble Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, and Martín Perna, of Antibalas (the famed afrobeat orchestra associated with the acclaimed Broadway musical Fela), Ocote Soul Sounds return this summer with their fourth studio album for ESL Music, Taurus.
Taurus sees the cosmic producers honing their signature psychedelic, analog funk infused, Afro-Cuban sound and crafting an album bigger than any of their previous efforts. That’s not to say it’s a massive departure from their back catalogue, but this time, the vibrations are stronger, more muscular and confident. Marking their first time working with an outside producer, Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, Ocote Soul Sounds maintains their cosmic ambiance while building on the pan-Latino rhythms that have become favorites of dance freaks and headphone space cadets alike.
Recorded during marathon sessions in Austin, TX and Washington, DC over the course of a year, the twelve songs on Taurus move like anthems, with each composition by Perna and Quesada sounding like a declaration of confidence in the bands evolution.

Kabanjak is a multi-instrumentalist, and one half of the Ancient Astronauts, one of our favorite downtempo beat makers on the scene today. ESL Music is putting out Kabanjaks new album, titled, Tree of Mystery. You can stream the album above and buy it here. Last year I had a great time hanging out with and performing shows with the Astronauts at SXSW, and Tom Strach, the other astronaut kept hyping Kabanjak up to me. Tom runs Switchstance Recordings, the German label that put out Ancient Astronauts and Kabanjak records in Europe and which we’ve been a fan of for a long time here at Six Degrees. They even did a remix for Vieux Farka Touré last year, and Kabanjak did a remix for Issa Bagayogo a few years back that still rocks dancefloors. The Astronauts SXSW dj sets were great and since then the Astronauts have played some amazing festivals including Lollapalooza, it will be great to see what orbit Kabanjak lands in after this new release. This record is full of dirty drums, dubby melodies and dark moods, German jazz pushed through Jamaican effects and hip-hop beats.

San Francisco’s Bass Pioneer and Surya Dub resident Kush Arora has re-imagined Nickodemus‘ Balkan inspired mid-tempo ’2 Sips and Magic’ song into a club (or playa) anthem.
Kush says that his remix is “a bashy bashy tribal banger around 132 bpm with santoor from the original, my take on a lot of the soca step, uk funky, and tribal house revival that’s been happening over the past few years! I hope you guys enjoy.”
