Free Download – “Ghabileye Leyli” by Mehrpouya
It seems hard for most westerners to imagine today, but in the middle part of last century, the Iranian government was very supportive of the western way of life. American and British records had a strong influence, and the music that came out of this renaissance (’53-’79) was an incredible mix of rock, jazz, soul, funk, and indigenous music.
Finally, 40 years later, some of the long lost popular music of Iran is beginning to resurface. Secret Stash Records is extremely proud to announce this release that focuses exclusively on Funk and Soul tunes recorded in Iran during the 70s. These tracks have been hand selected after hundreds of hours of digging and searching through almost forgotten archives. They are a mix of instrumental, Farsi vocal, and English cover songs. This record is packed full of deep grooves, killer breaks, and high energy, all with a healthy dose of Persian influence. Each LP comes with a free digital download of the entire album and is packaged in a re-sealable dust bag.

Listen/Buy Brownout – ‘AGUILAS AND COBRAS REMIXED AND REGROOVED’ from iTunes/Amazon/Six Degrees Store
Brownout, the Psychedelic Latin Funk alter ego of Grupo Fantasma, heated up dance-floors and critic’s lists around the world with last year’s Aguilas & Cobras record. The group’s trademark soulful beats, psychedelic guitar excursions, tough grooves and ultra-tight horn arrangements have now been handed over to a dream team of remixers from the electronic dance, funk, cumbia & nu-groove scene, resulting in Aguilas & Cobras Remixed & Re-Grooved. Remixers include J Boogie, The Mexican Dubwiser, Tal M. Klein, Kokolo’s Ray Lugo, Second Sky & Thomas Blondet, Jeremy Sole, Senor Oz, Afrolicious, Anthony Mansfield, Grant Phabao & CaZ.
There is also a limited edition hand numbered cd available at the Six Degrees Shop and at Brownout live shows, which is still the best place to hear this fiery band!

It’s SXSW time of year, when all the attention starved bands from across the world descend upon a small city in Texas to try and make some noise and get as much free beer and food as possible. Six Degrees own Brownout is based in Austin, so the festivities are nothing new to them. They will be performing two times next Thursday March 18th, first at 3pm at 604 E 6th St above El Sol Y La Luna and their feature showcase is the Funk Aid for Africa and Haiti. Adrian Quesada of Brownout will also be performing with one of his other projects, Ocote Soul Sounds, on Tuesday night at Momo’s for the World Groove party. Six Degrees blogger/designer/dj Señor Oz will be in Austin as well with some great white label Brownout remix discs and other giveaways, stop him and say hello!

As we continue to post a different, classic episode of our radio show up on Soundcloud every Thursday- this week we have put up one of my favorite episodes: “Afro Space Traveler”.
This show traces the family tree of African influenced “musical space explorers” from Sun Ra to Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix to Parliment to Prince on through to Theo Parrish,Carl Craig & Moodyman. Space is the Place!

FREE DOWNLOAD – Pleasuremaker – Edge of Town (Featuring Nappy G and Soulati)
Pleasuremaker is part of the extended Six Degrees family and holds it down as a dj at the weekly Afrolicious party in San Francisco. Last year his production skills led to remixes for Issa Bagayogo, Nappy G, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience as well as an EP by his own band. To kick off 2010, Pleasuremaker has a new album in store and is releasing an advance single of his signature poly-rhythmic soul from the record as a free download. Enjoy and share! and if you’re in California this week you can catch Pleasuremaker djng in Los Angeles on Thursday March 11th at the Afrofunke party at Zanzibar, at Ashkenaz in Berkeley on Friday the 12th and every Thursday at the Afrolicious party at the Elbo Room in San Francisco.
Film maker Miguel Alvarez just completed this wonderfully whacked out video for Brownout’s track “Slinky”. As I told band member Adrian Quesada, any video that features Sun Ra AND Santo the Mexican wrestling hero is OK in my book.
Mark you calendar because Brownout’s super funky, Aguilas & Cobras hits stores on Sept. 15th. Pre-sale available here.
We’ve known DJ Vinnie Esparza since he was just a pup. He’s always had great taste in jazzy, funky & psychedelic grooves and has been voted “Best DJ in San Francisco” a few times. He’s also been known to release some rare and tasty sounds on his own Disjoint label. We’ve asked Vinnie to bring Global Noize a regular selection of some of his favorite tunes. Check back every Friday for a hand picked selection that’s guaranteed to make your weekends groove harder-
Here is a selection of some of my favorite tunes that fans of Six Degrees will dig!
The song is called “Booty Butt” and the artist is Ray Charles. ‘Nuff said!
Such a hot version that was recorded before the more popular Black Uhuru rendition.
This is a group called The Ordells. This song is so beautiful, it almost hurts.
Cortijo and the gang just killin’ it in this old clip. Vaya!
Being from Oakland myself, I had to put this on.
