On the most musically bright of sides on this otherwise dark weathered morning, today (2/19) saw the release of Ascend, the new album from David Starfire. Hailed as his most “live” project thus far, Ascend serves as further evidence of Starfire’s innovative mastery of musical fusion. A sound that knows no genre-limiting boundaries, “Ascend” features what Starfire describes as “an eclectic mix of bhangra, Arabic, dub, reggae, dubstep, moombahcore, trap and other genres produced in ‘Starfire’ fashion”. On Ascend a collaborative spirit propels the good vibes of Starfire’s category-defying sound. Among artists featured on the album are founding father of hip-hop Afrika Bambaataa, fellow members of the Six Degrees family Cheb i Sabbah and Natacha Atlas, Desert Dwellers, iCatching, and Sheila Govindarajan.

Six Degrees artist, David Starfire, will be joining forces with Wanderlust Festival this Saturday to perform the main stage and give listeners a taste of his latest album, Bollyhood Bass remixes Vol 2.
Taking place in San Francisco, Wanderlust at the Fillmore will feature the ecstatic yoga teachings of Prana Flow fire keeper Shiva Rea and SF’s own Steph Snyder amidst a backdrop of pulsating rhythms and bliss-infused-beats of compliments of Grateful Dead drummer and renowned world music guru Mickey Hart. On Bollyhood Bass Remixes Vol. 2, you’ll hear the spirit David Starfire’s native region and Creole heritage mostly in the gutbucket funk that animates nearly every track – as well as in the hip hop elements that he has distributed generously throughout the program. “The Beat,” for example, features a charmingly squidgy synthesizer bass, rolling dhol drum, and sharp-tongued rapping courtesy of guest MC with vocals by iCatching. “Shout It Out” prominently features some very fine beatboxing (by Lynx) alongside an acoustic guitar-driven groove and even more rapping, all of it leavened by various Asian flavors. Other Caribbean influences are audible throughout the album as well: on “Baghdad,” the slow and trip-hoppy beat is interwoven with explicitly dubwise reverb and echo effects and punctuated by Jamaica-inflected vocal samples; “Load” piles on layers of science fiction dub effects as well, this time juxtaposed with keening Asian vocals.
